Behind the Scenes of Legally Blonde: A Cast Reflection

I am quite un-thrilled to tell you that I did not make the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. And I know I can talk all day long about my enviousness for the girl who was granted the role of Elle Woods, though I must admit that she is rather superior at singing and acting. At first when we had scenes to collaborate together, I had been reluctant to be friends with her, and so we only had curt conversations just to consult where the chairs are placed.

As the show went on, I couldn’t help but adore the way the girl who got Elle Woods sang in confidence. Her posture and voice made it very clear that she was able to lead on the show. She was also more experienced than I am and despite knowing that I am a bit sour on not getting the role, helped me since it was my first time in the musical. I wanted to be her friend, and instead of going straight up to her, I chose to slip notes into her envelop (there is one envelop for everyone who is in the play, both cast and crew, so you can message in compliments). We became more amiable and even though we seldomly communicate during the play, our little cards kept us together.

At the day of the show, the girl who played Elle Woods had trouble getting on her blonde wig. Everyone else was too occupied applying makeup to notice or give a helping hand, but I had finished with my costume and decided to assist. It was the first time I had ever really interacted with her instead of just some notes. I helped her pin her hair to her head, and then the wig, and eventually hairspray everything. I brushed the wig out and constantly stopped to ask her if it was too tight. It was that day when we exchanged numbers and realized we had so much in common. I am so glad I had reached out to her and now we are excellent friends and text each other often.

Now, I’d like to elaborate more about my feelings toward some characters in Legally Blonde.

Selena; Prison Guard: Selena is one of the sorority girls with Elle Woods during the first few scenes, and the Prison Guard, whom I named Bob since I’m playing it, is the guard who escorts Brooke. At first, as you can tell, I had craved for the role of Elle Woods and felt deeply disappointed I ended up with two side characters. However, as the play continued, I realized Selena and I both are compassionate, and loud! (Of course, in a good way). When I heard the original musical soundtracks, I realized Selena sounded exactly like me. The Prison Guard also helped me surge in my acting skills. Usually, prison guards are tough and cruel looking, but when I went on stage for the first time to rehearse, I put on my brightest smile, and stood with my arms fidgeting and my feet together. After being told how I look like a student being lectured, I changed position until I had a solemn face on, with my legs standing apart, and my hands crossed in front of my chest. I now understood how to act for different characters. Overall, I enjoyed the play and loved playing my characters.

Paulette, the stylist and emotional therapist for Elle Woods, is a cherished character by the audience with hilarious lines and scenes such as breaking Kyle’s nose in Bend and Snap, therefore ensuring that the crowd burst out into laughter. She is known to be clumsy and long to be loved, being an amiable character. I love Paulette because she has a lot of traits in her, compassion, integrity, helpfulness, clumsiness and many more. I share similar traits with her, and I would love to play her in the future.
